KEM-ECO is located in the heart of the Sedili river basin. It is a tidal, fresh water, tropical swamp forest extensively studied by the botanist, E.J.H. Corner from 1926 to the 50's. Though developed in parts for oil-palm cultivation, the Mawai area is still rich in flora and fauna. There is abundant bird life including hornbill, magpie robin, malkohas, fish owls and other raptors. Four species of monkey can be seen, the short tail macaque, the long tail macaque, dusky leaf monkey and the white handed gibbon. These can be heard singing every morning nearby. Other fauna includes tapir, mouse deer, elephant and wild boar. Fresh-water prawns and many varieties of fish can be found in the river. A Broad range of the tropical heath forest plant community is still intact.

Kem-Eco is built over the swamp vegetation using recycled timbers. The existing terrain and vegetation is undisturbed by the construction. It was hand-built by Orang Asli of the Jakun tribe from Endau-Rompin National Park.

LOCATION: 20 Minutes North of Kota Tinggi Town, Johore, Malaysia
