In November 1991, Akitek Tenggara won a limited competition for the additions and alterations to Beatty Secondary School to bring the outdated buildings up to present- day standards.
It was an opportunity to apply the evolving tropical design language to an existing building. A new wing has been added to the school and several secondary shading devices incorporated to improve the climatic responsiveness of the building.
These devices
create an exhilarating interplay of lines and shadows. The simple additions
provide a much enhanced public façade for the school facing a principle
road, Lorong 6 Toa Payoh.
